In de interdisciplinaire conferentie die op 30 en 31 mei aan de Erasmus School of Philosophy (EUR) zal plaatsvinden ter gelegenheid van het emeritaat van Jos de Mul zullen een aantal Nederlandse collega’s waarmee hij gedurende zijn academische leven in NWO- en ander verband nauw heeft samengewerkt. What are they, but most of all, what could video games be? To what extent are old and new generations influenced and "educated", directly or indirectly, consciously and unconsciously, by the videogame applications developed for (and in) the psycho-social space of the “Global Market”? What relationship exists between High Culture, in the complexity of its (re) definition, and the world of contemporary (Cyber)Ludus? In 2018 Fabio Belsanti, CEO and Lead game designer of AgeOfGames with a background as a historian, Roberto Talamo, literary theorist and teacher, and Elisa Di Lorenzo, CEO Untold Games, questioned themselves and, at the same time, asked a first group of scholars/academics and developers, these and many more questions with the purpose to feed the international debate on the complex and multifaceted universe of videogames.
In the spirit of Johan Huizinga's great essay “Homo Ludens”, the project has a clear multidisciplinary approach and will try to proceed in multiple directions by involving scholars and developers from all over the world in the formulation of ever new, problematic questions (and, perhaps, answers). In addition to an extensive video section, with discussions and interviews, the project contributed, in collaboration with professor Marco Accordi Rickards, CEO Vigamus Foundation, to the creation of a first miscellaneous work that crystallizes some reflections developed during the round tables. The work is entitled “Homo Cyber Ludens” and has collected very high profile contributions.

IANUS ('Inspiring and ANchoring trUst in Science, research and innovation') is a Horizon Europe project funded by the European Commission. Our aim is to strengthen warranted trust in science by fostering participation in research as a co-creative and inclusive process, sensitive to societal values, concerns and needs. We believe that trust must be inspired by transparency and trustworthiness of knowledge production, and anchored by actively involving and serving society, as part of the modus operandi of science. The complexity and urgency of societal challenges has rapidly intensified, and trust in science is an important requirement to address these challenges effectively.
On the 13th of June 2022, the IANUS project will be launched during a public conference, involving prominent speakers and panel discussions on open science and populism; science, pharmaceutical companies and global political tensions (lessons from the COVID pandemic, and promises and concerns regarding AI.

‘Welcome in the desert of the real.’ Met deze onheilspellende woorden van filosoof Baudrillard wordt hoofdpersoon Neo welkom geheten in de ‘echte wereld’. The Matrix-trilogie is een ode aan de fundamentele filosofische vraag: wat is waar? Prof. dr. Jos de Mul, hoogleraar wijsbegeerte (Erasmus Universiteit), laat zien hoeveel filosofie er achter The Matrix schuilgaat: van Plato en Descartes tot aan Nietzsche. De trilogie blijkt actueler dan ooit. Leven wij tegenwoordig – gekluisterd aan onze beeldschermen en gebombardeerd door fake news – niet deels in een virtuele wereld? Waar in The Matrix machines energie uit mensen zogen, daar onttrekken nu Google en Facebook informatie aan ons. In zijn lezing zal De Mul ook uitvoerig ingaan op het zowel bejubelde als verguisde vierde deel van The Matrix Saga, dat eerder dit jaar in première ging.

Centraal in het denken van Helmut Plessner (1892 – 1985) stond de excentrische positie van de mens, ofwel het idee dat de mens de mogelijkheid bezit zichzelf als object te zien ten opzichte van de wereld en zijn medemensen. Helmut Plessner was een academicus met een groot bereik en zijn gedachtegoed verspreidde zich eveneens buiten de academie, zo ook onder D66’er Jan Glastra van Loon (1920 – 2001) en PvdA’er Lolle Nauta (1929 – 2006). Hoe is die centrale gedachte van Plessner van invloed geweest op hun praktische bijdragen aan de democratie in Nederland? In deze lezing onderzoekt Kees Schuyt het gedachtegoed van Helmut Plessner en hoe zich dat verhoudt tot het functioneren van de liberale democratie.
Op basis van het beginsel van de excentrische positie van Plessner heeft de moderne democratie binnen de politieke filosofie van Van Loon en Nauta een disciplinerende kracht: zij beschermt tegen machtsmisbruik en discriminatie en is dus een onlosmakelijke basis van de liberale democratie. Van Loon en Nauta waren de eerste leerlingen van Plessner in Nederland. Beiden studeerden en promoveerden in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw. Waar is Plessners mens- en wereldbeeld bij beiden terug te vinden en hoe uitte zich dit in hun politiek? Aan de hand van hedendaagse voorbeelden buigt Kees Schuyt zich over Plessners filosofische antropologie en hoe deze zich verhoudt tot het functioneren van de liberale democratie.
Over de sprekers
Kees Schuyt is emeritus hoogleraar Sociologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij is gespecialiseerd in rechtssociologie en is expert op het gebied van Helmut Plessners gedachtengoed. Schuyt is een van de meest invloedrijke sociologen van Nederland en een bekende stem in het publieke debat. Hij heeft zich jarenlang ingezet bij de Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid (WRR) en de Raad van State.
Jos de Mul (moderator) is hoogleraar Wijsgerige antropologie en haar geschiedenis aan de Erasmus School of Philosophy, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Zijn werk is mede geïnspireerd door Plessner. Van 2005 tot 2011 was hij Vizepräsident van de Helmuth Plessner Gesellschaft en in 2014 verscheen onder zijn redactie Plessner’s Philosophical Anthropology. Helmuth Plessner was een van de grote figuren van de wijsgerige antropologie in het 20e eeuw. Als Duitser met een Joodse familieachtergrond heeft hij bijna twintig jaar in Nederland doorgebracht. Plessner’s werk is dus zowel met Nederland als ook met Duitsland verbonden. Maar hij is niet alleen als historische figuur interessant, zijn speciale interpretatie van wijsgerige antropologie vindt juist in de laatste decennia grote belangstelling.
De ‘Helmuth-Plessner-Gesellschaft’ heeft daarom de workshop “Plessner in/en Nederland” georganiseerd, die van 30 maart t/m april op het NIAS in Amsterdam plaats vindt. In Greek mythology, we come across wonderful human-animal combinations: the Centaur, the creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body and legs of a horse; Medusa, the woman with eyes of stone, from whose head snakes grow instead of hair; Chimaera, the monster with the head of a lion, the body of a goat and a snake for a tail? They sowed death and destruction. Quite comforting that they don’t exist.
Or should we say: did not yet exist? Because human-animal combinations are among us again, and this time not as creations of mythological imagination, but as products of contemporary biotechnology, such as cybrids and chimeras. Think of mice with sizable pieces of genetic code that originated from the human genome, used in cancer and pharmaceutical research, or pigs with a human heart, that are grown for medical applications.
Such biotechnological creations evoke a lot of discussions and resistance in public debates. This resistance is partly based on rational arguments, such as health risks, but often strong emotions, like feelings of disgust, play a major role as well. Why would that be the case? All things considered, contemporary biological insights inform us that human beings, like all species, actually are already polygenomic organisms, and for that reason, fundamental biological concepts such as ‘individual’ and ‘species’ deserve considerable nuance. On closer inspection, the mythological human-animal combinations appear to contain more truth on this point than nineteenth-century biology, which was strongly driven by a separative cosmology, which still haunts common sense conceptions of life today.
In his lecture De Mul will discuss recent developments in postgenomic molecular biology from the perspective of the interconnective cosmology of Greek mythology. Not in order to claim the ‘eternal truth’ of this ancient cosmology, but to show that it contains insights that help us to better understand contemporary postgenomic biology and philosophical anthropology and to situate them in a broader world-historical context.

Stanley Kubricks film 2001: A Space Odyssey wordt terecht beschouwd als een van de hoogtepunten uit de geschiedenis van de sciencefiction. De uit 1968 stammende film wordt niet alleen geroemd vanwege zijn grote artistieke kwaliteiten en zijn nog altijd verbazingwekkende (analoge) special effects, maar vooral ook vanwege de ideeënrijkdom die er uit spreekt. Wanneer we vanuit 2021 terugblikken op de film, realiseren we ons dat de film niet alleen gaat over een odyssee door de ruimte., maar evenzeer om een odyssee door cyberspace!

Is life merely a simulation? When the Matrix released in 1999, the movie dealing with this question became a global phenomenon. And while the story of robots controlling our very reality might have seemed a silly science fiction premise then, the idea of life being a mere simulation kept philosopher Descartes up for nights back in the 1600’s. What other philosophical ideas are there to be found in The Matrix?
On December 22, The Matrix Resurrections premiered in the US, more than 15 years after the original trilogy ended. The series was known for the many philosophical ideas it brought to the big screen. From Plato’s famous allegory of the cave, to Descartes’ ideas of a ‘deceiving demon’. The directors of the movie even made all actors read philosophical works before the movie started filming. In this lecture, professor of philosophy Jos de Mul will look back at the old trilogy, he will interpret the new movie (which was released on January 26 in The netherlands), and he will tell us what we can learn philosophically from these films. Moreover, he will go into detail on the influence the movie has had on society. Think, for example, of the controversial ‘Red Pill’ movement that developed over the past decade. He will use excerpts from the films to analyze the movies to the greatest detail. Are you prepared to swallow the Purple Pill?

Jos de Mul studied philosophy, art history and social sciences at the universities of Amsterdam, Utrecht and Nijmegen (The Netherlands). At present he is full professor Philosophy of Man and Culture at the Faculty of Philosophy, Erasmus University Rotterdam. He has also taught at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, 2007-2008), Fudan University (Shanghai, 2008), and Ritsumeikan University (Kyoto, 2016). In 2012 he became a visiting fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA. From 2005 to 2011 he was Vice-President of the Helmuth Plessner Gesellschaft, and from 2007 to 2010 President of the International Association for Aesthetics.
