Online winkelen, vakantie boeken: we gebruiken massaal internet. Maar  de helft van de Nederlanders vertrouwt de ICT-systemen van de overheid niet erg, stelde de Nationale ombudsman in 2013 vast. Toch wil het kabinet dat we over twee jaar allemaal onze zaken met die overheid via internet regelen. 

Waar komt het wantrouwen tegen de overheid vandaan? En wat kan de overheid daartegen doen?

Multiculturalismo, nuove tecnologie e religione

In epoche storiche lontane, i cambiamenti avvenivano con molta lentezza e le società tendevano a essere più omogenee. Oggi - soprattutto grazie ai nuovi media - c'è più scambio tra culture diverse, le persone sono in grado di entrare in contatto e conoscerle, quindi hanno maggiore possibilité di scelta.

Jos de Mul è professore di Antropologia filosofica all’università Erasmus di Rotterdam, dove è a capo della sezione Filosofia dell’uomo e della cultura. Inoltre, è direttore dell’istituto di ricerca «Filosofia delle tecnologie dell’informazione e della comunicazione» (ɸIct). Tra le sue pubblicazioni in inglese, Destiny Domesticated. The Rebirth of Tragedy Out of the Spirit of Technology (2014), Cyberspace Odyssey. Towards a Virtual Ontology and Anthropology (2010) e The Tragedy of Finitude. Dilthey’s Hermeneutics of Life (2004). L’abbiamo intervistato a Porto, in Portogallo, dove si trovava e ci trovavamo per una conferenza dal titolo «Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger? Philosophical investigations into Big Data».

In un suo recente articolo, per spiegare cos’è il multiculturalismo, fa l’esempio di una ragazza incrociata nella metropolitana di Rotterdam. Per me è stato illuminante. Potrebbe riprenderlo qui?

Si trattava di una sorta di fenomeno ibrido, perché era musulmana (portava il velo) ma allo stesso tempo usava dei pattini, aveva una t-shirt con lo smile e un telefono in mano. Stava parlando, probabilmente con un’amica, in uno strano misto di arabo e olandese con un forte accento di Rotterdam. Per me è diventata una specie di simbolo della società multiculturale in cui ci troviamo oggi. Certo, penso che le culture siano sempre state una specie di ricombinazione di elementi presi da tradizioni più antiche o da altre tradizioni.

Prof. dr. Jos de Mul reist heel wat af. Op dit moment werkt hij aan een boek over zijn filosofische reisverhalen, met de voorlopige titel Denkwegen. Omzwervingen van een filosofisch toerist. Het zijn veelal reportages, met een humoristische ondertoon, van reizen die hij in het kader van zijn werk maakte en waarvan een deel in de afgelopen jaren onder andere in het Cultureel Supplement van de NRC en de bijlage Letter & Geest van Trouw zijn gepubliceerd. Jos de Mul, Database Identity: Personal and Cultural Identity in the Age of Global Datafication. in: Wouter de Been, Payal Aurora and Mireille Hildebrandt (Eds.), Crossroads in New Media, Identity and Law. The Shape of Diversity to Come. Personal and Cultural Identity in the Age of Global Datafication. Basingstoke/New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2015, 97-118. 

This volume brings together a number of timely contributions at the nexus of new media, politics and law. The central intuition that ties these essays together is that information and communication technology, cultural identity, and legal and political institutions are spheres that co-evolve and interpenetrate in myriad ways. Discussing these shifting relationships, the contributions all probe the question of what shape diversity will take as a result of the changes in the way we communicate and spread information: that is, are we heading to the disintegration and fragmentation of national and cultural identity, or is society moving towards more consolidation, standardization and centralization at a transnational level? In an age of digitization and globalization, this book addresses the question of whether this calls for a new civility fit for the 21st century.

Jos de Mul, to begin with, takes the issue of identity head-on in his contribution. He argues that new networked communication technologies are leading to a datafication of identity. New ICTs are transforming traditional ‘narrative identity’ into a more plastic form of ‘database identity.’ Identity as the product of a linear development, as an outgrowth of a particular personal or group history – the bread and butter of the imagined community – is on the wane. Increasingly identity is broken up into machine-readable elements and stored in digital memory banks. This allows for an endless combination and re-combination of features. By itself this process does not necessarily result in a world of freedom and play, however. Although database identities allow for an extraordinary range of choice and are well suited to the freedom and flexibility of postmodern culture, there is a great deal of uniformity in the forms that database identities actually take. Hence, De Mul also addresses the standardization of identity in the prefabricated formats of social media, underlining the new entrapments of the digital age.

The development of the representation of the landscape in Europe since the 14^th century Renaissance can be understood as a mirror of the development of modern and postmodern Western culture as a whole. After sketching the development of landscape representation in modern and postmodern Europe, the article focuses on the theme of sublimity, which, at least since the era of Romanticism, has been inherent to the European experience and representation of the landscape, both in its successive natural and in its technological manifestation. Against this background, the paper also discusses some striking differences between the European and the Asian landscape.

讲座现场 || 数字化操控时代的艺术作品

5月 18 日晚，我馆特邀荷兰鹿特丹大学的约斯•德•穆尔（Jos de Mul）教授在湖北美术学院藏龙岛校区举办了主题为《数字化操控时代的艺术作品》的讲座。

【讲座内容实录】

我（约斯•德•穆尔）将从本雅明的《机械复制时代的艺术作品》出发，阐述本雅明关于膜拜价值和展示价值的观念， 而后把数据库作为范式模型， 勾勒出创建计算机对象的基本操作， 最后解释为什么说数据库从本体论上把以展示价值为特征的现代艺术作品转变为以操控价值为特征的后现代艺术作品。

概 述

艺术和科技是密切相关的， 艺术家总是在利用媒体（media）不管是那些创作壁画的史前绘画者， 还是那些依靠计算机技术工作的新媒体艺术家。广义的媒体， 意即“传达信息的方式“， 对塑造人类的心灵和经验、认识和感知世界起着关键作用。

本雅明的著作《机械复制时代的艺术作品》提到，独一无二（unique)、奥若蒂克式的(Auratic) 的特点强调了古典艺术品的膜拜价值（cult value）， 而机械地（mechanically)复制性的（reproduce)现代艺术品则强调了其展示价值（exhibition value)。然而在数字化重组（digital recombination） 时代， 数据库构成了后现代艺术作品的本体论模型，在此转变中， 展示价值（exhibition value)正被我们所谓的操控价值（manipulation value） 所取代。

本雅明的论述声称是对艺术的分析， 但其实际论域却要广泛得多。同样， 我在数字化重组时代继续本雅明的分析， 论域将超出艺术或美学。还将分析自然和文化的数字化操控， 它是当前“信息时代” 的特征。

De Vereniging Natuurmonumenten, die op 22 april j.l. precies 110 jaar bestond, hield ter gelegenheid daarvan in Amersfoort een voorjaarsforum over natuurinnovatie onder de prikkelende titel ‘Technologie, natuurlijk’. Jos de Mul was een van de sprekers op dit forum. De volgende tekst is een ingekorte versie van zijn lezing.

Niet terug, maar vooruit naar de natuur!

En dan: wat is natuur nog in dit land? Een stukje bos, ter grootte van een krant. De dichter Bloem zat er, domweg gelukkig in de Dapperstraat,  niet echt mee, maar veel Nederlanders wel. De Vereniging Natuurmonumenten driekwart miljoen leden - daar kunnen politieke partijen slechts van dromen.

De vereniging beweert dat de natuur ernstig wordt bedreigd. We lezen op de website: “In een dichtbevolkt land is natuur extra kwetsbaar. Daarom beschermt Natuurmonumenten natuurgebieden, waardevolle landschappen en cultureel erfgoed. Overal in Nederland. Voor iedereen. Die natuur stellen we veilig tot in de eeuwigheid door natuur aan te kopen, te beheren en toegankelijk te maken voor iedereen.” 

Mooi. Maar wat zijn precies die natuurgebieden, welke landschappen zijn het waard behouden te worden, en wat maakt een natuurgebied tot cultureel erfgoed?

Met het neerhalen van vlucht MH17 werd Nederland hardhandig met het noodlot geconfronteerd. Weten wij anno nu nog wel raad met rampen, ongeluk en ander onvermijdelijk leed? Twee topwetenschappers durven het serieus te betwijfelen. 

We zijn niet meer in staat om om te gaan met de tragische componenten van het leven, is de diagnose. In plaats daarvan proberen we het noodlot te beteugelen met een verlammend net aan regels en wetten. Maar dat is tevergeefs, zullen Frissen en De Mul betogen. Een spoedcursus Griekse tragedies, Kafka en massa-psychologie – kortom: het noodlot voor dummies. Dit programma is de EUR-bijdrage aan de maand van de Filosofie.

Sinds 1905 zet Natuurmonumenten zich in voor de natuur. In de afgelopen 110 jaar is de wereld om ons heen enorm veranderd. Vorig jaar blikten we tijdens het Voorjaarsforum 2014 terug op het verleden en lieten we ons inspireren door de toekomst. Dit jaar blikken we nog verder vooruit.

Voorbereiden op de toekomst

Natuurmonumenten staat voor meer en mooiere natuur, voor huidige en toekomstige generaties. In hoeverre kunnen technologie en innovatie ons helpen bij deze missie?

De technologische ontwikkelingen gaan zo rap, dat het van belang is om de verschillende kansen en mogelijkheden tijdig te verkennen. Wat betekenen deze ontwikkelingen voor ons en wat zijn de verschillende relaties tussen natuur en technologie?

Sprekers

Natuur en technologie hebben elkaar veel te bieden. De natuur is een bron van inspiratie voor innovatie. Kijk naar het werk van iemand als Ylva Poelman. Zij ziet niet alleen de natuur als uitvinder, maar schrijft hier ook over. Haar boek over het kruispunt van innovatie en natuur, bionica, wordt in mei 2015 verwacht. Tijdens het Voorjaarsforum kan Ylva ons alvast een mooi voorproefje geven.

David Lemereis is een science factwatcher, iemand die de feiten op een rijtje zet om aan te tonen dat de toekomst allang begonnen is.  Volgens Lemereis is alles, maar dan ook werkelijk alles, over tien à vijftien jaar intelligent en verbonden. “We gaan niet toe naar the internet of things, maar naar the internet of everything.”

Als derde spreker komt Jos de Mul aan het woord. Hij kijkt nog even terug; zijn we niet te behoudend over behoud? Maar uiteraard kijkt ook hij vooruit; welke innovatieve ontwikkelingen zijn er en hoe ver kunnen we daarin gaan?" Jos de Mul daagt ons uit om na te denken over grotere morele en maatschappelijke vraagstukken die bij de technologische ontwikkelingen komen kijken. Wat betekenen recente ontwikkelingen in de robotica, neurowetenschappen en biotechnologie voor ons zelfbegrip en dagelijks leven? En mogen we technologieën inzetten om bijvoorbeeld planten, dieren en mensen te ‘verbeteren’?

Onze ambassadeur Bastiaan Ragas is gastheer van het Voorjaarsforum. En zoals gebruikelijk houden zowel algemeen directeur Marc van den Tweel als voorzitter Hans Wijers een voordracht. Kortom, het Voorjaarsforum 2015 belooft weer een enerverend en inspirerend evenement te worden.

Jos de Mul. Earth Garden. Not going back, but going forward to nature. Invited lecture at International Conference Environmental Aesthetics & Beautiful China. Wuhan: University of Wuhan, May 21, 2015.

Abstract Against the background of a short meditation on the contrasting ways in which landscape has been represented and idealized in Eastern and Western painting traditions, the article will try to show, using some striking examples, that the development of landscape painting in the last two centuries reflects the changing relationship of humanity and nature, leading in both the East and in the West to either the expression of a nostalgic longing for nature to be back as it once was, or to a gloomy expression of the vanishing of nature amidst the modern, technological world. Connecting to both the concept of “harmony,” which is a key concept in Eastern aesthetics, and to some recent reflections in Western philosophy on the relationship of nature and technology, a post-nostalgic conception of nature and natural beauty is defended, in which nature and technology are no longer seen as opposing categories, but rather as poles that are intertwined in an ever-lasting process of co-evolution. It is argued that we should not so much strive to go “back to nature,” but rather to go “forward to nature” and establish a new harmony between human and non-human nature and technology. The article ends with some reflections on the role aestheticians may play in this transformation.
